MYOPIA

Myopia is a series of images that portrays the perspective in which photographer Isaac Chu sees the world without his glasses. He has been wearing prescribed glasses from a very young age and seeing the world without glasses clearly is only something he could only dream of today. This series features treasured scenes in his everyday life that he yearns to see if he could regain perfect eyesight, as well as two contrasting images of how his friends see the world. His images also represent his way of life and how he is able to find beauty in even the most mundane scene.

There is this sense of nostalgia that his images evoke in you, where you find yourself in a space where time stands still, almost as if in a tranquil. This work was inspired by the constant reminder of a friend who said he was legally blind. This spurred him to document how he sees without his spectacles and prove that he can still make out what he sees and is not actually just a vast blur void. The attention to the colours and overall composition was very much inspired by his favourite photographer, the late Saul Leiter.

Isaac hopes that as he takes you on this visual journey, you will realise that beauty comes in all shapes and forms and more importantly, he isn’t blind.
